Grand Charleston Single House

about the project

The owners of this grand Charleston Single House wished to make the house uniquely their own, without losing the character-defining historic features of the early-19th century structure.  SvMA identified and preserved historic components, allowing the owner to create layered spaces by pairing new finishes with original interiors.  As a result, the historic rooms were largely kept intact, while the hyphen and existing kitchen house were comprehensively renovated.

Spaces were modified to create a more efficient floor plan, including the relocation of a back staircase.  The reconfigured kitchen was inspired by early-20th Century Newport cottage kitchens - tall ceilings, high storage, tiled walls, and utilitarian fixtures. French doors and windows were added to maximize light.  A new guest bedroom suite, which enjoys views over the redesigned garden, was added in the kitchen house above the laundry and family room.  Collaborating closely with the landscape architect, SvMA carefully designed and located a new pool house which provided amenity space while also screened views of the pool from the street.
