Church Street Georgian Single House
about the project
This historic Single House, situated within the boundaries of Charleston’s original Wall, once belonged to ancestors of the current owners. SvMA worked closely with the easement holder to protect sensitive spaces, and then comprehensively renovated the remaining areas to meet the owners’ programmatic requirements in the hyphen and rear addition. The team resourcefully incorporated unique moments throughout the historic house, including a wet bar hidden inside a closet and a custom bookshelf designed to mimic the original woodwork in the second floor study. The fireplaces were restored to their original wood burning configuration and condition. SvMA added a new entrance and mud room, creating a bright circulation node connecting the historic dining room and first floor porch to the redesigned kitchen and bar.
Natural light was a priority in the layout of the primary suite enfilade, linking the bedroom to a new paneled dressing room, vanity, linen closet, water closet and bath. A Doric portico was added at the back of the house, providing a formal transition from the family room into the redesigned garden.
