Carnegie Hill Classic Nine

about the project

The sensitive redesign of this Pre-War Classic Nine in Manhattan’s Carnegie Hill neighborhood was driven by the programmatic needs of a young family and a desire for infrastructural improvements while preserving the character of the historic co-op.  The scope of the renovation focused on extensive modifications in the kitchen and service wing, restoring and enlivening primary entertaining spaces, and refreshing the private rooms of the apartment.

The addition of central air added a layer of complexity, requiring close coordination with engineers, building officials, and historic regulatory agencies to weave ductwork and mechanical systems throughout the unit.  New trim and embrasure doors provided aesthetic appeal in the restored living room, entry, and gallery.  The formal dining room was relocated and decorated with hand-painted wallpaper while incorporating built-in storage and niches for estate furniture pieces.  A family living and dining room was designed as an extension of the reconfigured kitchen, while the traditional staff quarters were converted into an additional bedroom suite and laundry space.  New herringbone floors tie the renovated spaces together, maintaining the building's historic formality while giving the space a fresh new life.
